Welcome to the newly refurbished Treeby & Bolton! After many months of planning, preparation, designing and deciding (and some sales in between!) we closed the shop doors for the first time in 14 years to give our much loved shop a bit of a makeover.
Treeby and Bolton has a long and distinguished history. Up to 1900 the shop specialised in novelty gifts before moving “up market” into oriental porcelain and English china. Mr Treeby and Mr Bolton and their families both lived on the premises, which had flats upstairs and down. Mr and Mrs Treeby had no children, but the Boltons had two, including a son who they named Treeby Bolton in honour of their partner and who took over the shop following the retirement of Treeby and Bolton.
Treeby was a well-known Keswick character, and one of his tasks used to be to test the ice on Derwentwater to see if it was safe for skating. In 1961 when Treeby Bolton retired to Blencathra Street – the shop was lit by a single 100 watt bulb and there were big glass cabinets from floor to ceiling.
In 2005 the premises was expanded to add the cafe and gallery and the accommodation upstairs was converted into retail space. The range expanded from traditional china and collectables into the gallery offering contemporary art and sculptures. In more recent years our offering has continued to grow and now alongside creative art glass, sculptures, and bronzes we showcase a selection of design led home, interior and lifestyle accessories.
Investing in our shop in the current retail environment was a considered but crucial decision – it’s critical that we continue to provide an inspiring and inviting destination for our customers. We want our shop to showcase the very best of independent bricks and mortar retailing. There’s no escaping the growth of online shopping but the store is part of our heritage and the experience you get here is what makes it special.
We hope you have a wonderful shopping experience and we look forward to welcoming our loyal customers as well as those who are visiting us for the first time.
